The Geopolitics
of the Seam

Sofie Anker’s practice operates at the intersection of symbolic confrontation and textile transformation. Anker does not merely manipulate material; she performs a forensic examination of national identity. By taking the symbols of entrenched geopolitical hostility—national flags—and subjecting them to a process of surgical deconstruction, she forces an impossible dialogue between opposing ideologies. The resulting works are not flags in the traditional sense, but tangible topographies of conflict, where the boundary between two states is resolved not by treaties, but by the thread.

The Intervention: Deconstructed and United
In her process, Anker challenges the rigidity of borders by physically merging them. Through the meticulous act of dismantling and reassembling these national emblems, she creates a jarring, hybrid materiality. The «Deconstructed and united» series forces the viewer to confront the collision of two realities within a single frame (200 x 150 cm). These pieces act as «textile sutures», holding together the tension of the original conflicts while simultaneously questioning the permanence of the nations they represent. The sewing machine becomes an instrument of both destruction and enforced unification.

Materiality as Political Dissent
As a core position within the Bureau for Art & Editions, Anker’s work serves as a visceral critique of fixed political narratives. By stripping the flags of their functional authority and turning them into raw, stitched fabric, she renders the concepts of sovereignty and statehood fragile and porous. Her interventions invite the viewer to look at the seams—the literal points of friction—where geopolitical reality is stitched together, revealing the instability that lies at the heart of every modern border.
